Raising Cats: Dealing with Biting Behaviors and Understanding Their Personalities

Hitting a cat can work for some, but not for others. The individual differences are huge. And when I say hitting, I mean making a big noise, just enough to hurt a bit, not to the point of causing injury. Generally, it’s not recommended to hit a cat. The cat is small now and doesn’t have the ability to seriously hurt you. But do you really want to keep provoking its aggressive and hunting instincts and raise a natural ambush – skilled predator by your side? Engaging in daily close – range “combat”, what for? (:з」∠) For the challenge? Also, you sleep at home. What a great ambush time for a cat!

A cat’s personality has no absolute connection with its breed. It is related to the degree of socialization it experiences from one – and – a – half months to three – and – a – half months old when it’s with its parents. If it learns well and its parents are affectionate towards people, its habits will be good. If it’s also intelligent, like my third cat, just saying “no” in a round – mouthed way when it bites is enough. Since it came home and started biting, I only needed to say this to it, and it stopped biting after less than three times. For cats that haven’t been socialized, especially those that might not be very smart, like my second cat, after more than a year, if my feet aren’t hidden well under the quilt at night, I may still get bitten (:з」∠) Socialization is really important.

I have three cats, and their situations are different. The first cat came to my home when it was one year old. It was a stray kitten in its early days and was picked up by my friend who thought it was a puppy. My friend had many dogs, so she took care of it as if it were a puppy. As it grew a bit, she realized it was a cat, and as it grew even bigger, she found out she was allergic to cats (:з」∠) I was also raising dogs at that time, so I took over this cat. Generally speaking, except for the tear – stain problem that Persian cats are prone to, it’s very worry – free, but it’s timid. During the period when this cat was testing to bite people, I learned from other cat – raising friends. Wherever it bit me, I would bite it in the same place. For example, if it bit my left hand, I would immediately bite its left front paw, just hard enough to hurt, not to break the skin. After two times, each time after being bitten, the cat looked completely confused and shocked, and it never bit again.

However! This method failed with the second cat. I bit it countless times, but it was no use because of its low intelligence. The second cat is a Ragdoll. When it was brought home, it was only one – and – a – half months old. Yes, it perfectly missed the “lessons” from its parents and didn’t get socialized. This guy was taken care of by my elderly Chihuahua for two months. After the Chihuahua passed away, this kitten became like a “puppy” in the family. Yes, it would howl like a dog when getting an injection at the hospital, just like the Chihuahua’s own cub (:з」∠) I tried all kinds of methods on it, beating it, locking it in a cage, but nothing worked. Before, because I had a lung problem after being discharged from the hospital, I took it to be shaved in June last year. This guy could run wild in the pet store and was finally caught by covering it with a basin →_→ Suddenly, it became steady overnight when it was one year and two or three months old. British Shorthairs usually have a shorter growth period than Ragdolls. It is said that they generally start to become mature and steady at eight to ten months. Just persevere, and you can get through it. Come on!

The third cat came to my home when it was three – and – a – half months old. It’s a Maine Coon, and its personality and intelligence are really amazing. It’s very worry – free. Now it’s eight months old. Last night, when I was half – asleep, I felt it hugging my arm and something poking me. I touched it… It was a small lipstick (:з」∠) The cat has grown up.

Just… Teach according to the cat’s aptitude. Many cats don’t like to be held. My first cat has been in my home for almost three years, and it only allows me to hold it for a few seconds (:з」∠) The second cat can be held for a while. The third cat can be held for as long as you want if there’s nothing to distract it, but if it’s too hot in the room, it doesn’t like to be held.

If you completely let it be and expect it to suddenly stop biting when it grows up, it’s not very realistic. The possibility of forming a habit is greater than breaking it. It is recommended to immediately stop any behavior that may make the cat feel “provoked” with your body parts. Instead, use various types of cat – teasers. Also, you can try methods like confining the cat or biting it back, but remember, these methods vary from cat to cat. The individual differences are too great.
