Meiyuanmei: The Cat with Whom I Share a Wonderful Fate

Meiyuanmei: The Cat with Whom I Share a Wonderful Fate

On my birthday in 2018, the threads of fate quietly wove together, bringing me an incredibly precious gift – Meiyuanmei. On that day, a radio friend of my boyfriend posted a message on the social media that the kittens bred at home were available for sale. Just like that, Meiyuanmei entered our lives as a birthday present. What’s more surprising is that upon further understanding, I found out that she was born on the same day and month as my boyfriend. This wonderful coincidence was like a script written by fate long ago, making me firmly believe that our encounter was destined.

On the day I brought Meiyuanmei home, I immediately fell in love with this adorable girl with big eyes at first sight. At that time, she was like a sweet little candy, making people reluctant to let go. When she was over half a year old, Meiyuanmei was delicate and cute, exuding a fragrant and soft charm. Every day, I couldn’t help but kiss and hug her, fully enjoying every warm moment spent with her. The photos I took of her at that time recorded all kinds of funny sleeping postures. Looking back now, these moments seem to be little omens of her growth and transformation. At that time, as a precaution, I hung a name tag with my phone number on her collar, fearing that if she mischievously slipped out of the house one day, there would still be hope of finding her.

During the first winter, apart from occasionally posing in some slightly “funny” postures and her face becoming a bit darker in color, Meiyuanmei didn’t change much overall. She was still the lovely cat girl in my heart.

However, changes in life often occur unexpectedly. When I was approaching graduation, I was overwhelmed by various tasks related to my thesis, from the proposal, preliminary review, to countless revisions of the manuscript, finalizing the draft, and nervously waiting for the defense. I didn’t go back to my hometown for nearly a semester. Finally, when the defense was over, I dragged my suitcase and returned home full of anticipation. My mother greeted me and said, “Meiyuanmei is still sleeping.” Without thinking much, I happily walked around to the sofa, eager to bury my face in her soft belly fur. But I was stunned by what I saw. Meiyuanmei was lying on the sofa in all kinds of difficult gymnastic sleeping postures. Sometimes she twisted into a twisted shape, and sometimes she lay sprawled out. Her appearance was very different from the one in my memory. After changing several postures, she finally opened her eyes at an extremely tricky angle and casually glanced at me, standing dumbfounded in front of the sofa. Her eyes seemed to say, “Who are you?” I couldn’t help but wonder, “Who are you?”

Now, Meiyuanmei is more than two years old. When I took photos of her a few days ago, looking at her in the photos, my heart was filled with emotions. On October 9th, I updated her photos with confusion. But my family all told me in an encouraging and affirmative tone, “Meiyuanmei is losing weight recently.” “Meiyuanmei has lost weight. She’s so cute.” Looking closely, it seemed that she wasn’t as chubby as before. Looking at these photos and flipping through the old memory albums, all the bits and pieces of my time with Meiyuanmei came flooding back.

From the cute little kitten who first arrived at our home to the big girl with unique “sleeping styles” now, every moment of Meiyuanmei’s growth is deeply engraved in my heart. She is not just a cat but an important partner in my life and a family member who brings me countless joys and warmth. In the days to come, I look forward to continuing to accompany Meiyuanmei, witnessing more of her changes. No matter what she looks like, my love for her will never change, and our story will continue to be written in the long river of time.
