In 2021, the northeast seemed to skip autumn altogether. As I scrolled through my mom’s recent WeChat Moments, a photo of Caramel caught my eye. The cold weather these days has made the faces of Caramel and Toffee, my two Siamese cats, even darker. I can’t help but jokingly blame them for my bad luck in getting good items while gaming!
My story with these adorable furballs began in September 2019. While renting an apartment with my girlfriend, we decided to bring home our first Siamese kitten. That was Caramel. When we first brought her home at just over two months old, she was a little ball of nerves. She huddled in a corner, feigning shyness (though not too convincingly). But by that very night, she had already adapted to her new environment, sitting on the sofa with her paws neatly tucked under her body. She slept soundly in her cat bed, showing no fear of us at all.
At that time, I hadn’t told my family about adopting Caramel. It wasn’t until I was on my way home for the National Day holiday that I finally came clean. My parents, like many of their generation, had a soft spot for small animals but were indifferent to cats. They held the traditional belief that cats were unfaithful, while dogs were loyal companions. I was worried about how they would react, especially since I had made the decision without consulting them first.

When I brought Caramel home during the National Day holiday, my mom was visibly unhappy, and I was sure my dad would be even more opposed. They worried about the cat being disobedient and dirty. However, Caramel quickly won them over. She would sit on the tea table every day, intently watching the fish in the aquarium, perhaps wondering why these little creatures weren’t as free as she was.
During the holiday, I also took Caramel out for walks. She showed no signs of fear, her little head swiveling in all directions, curious about everything around her. She didn’t flatten her ears or have any signs of stress, proving to be a brave little explorer.
After the holiday, we returned to our rented apartment, and I took more photos of Caramel. Looking back now, she was incredibly cute as a kitten.
One day, I took Caramel to the beach. She had a look of resignation on her face, as if the whole experience was just too much for her. But this day turned out to be even more special because it was then that I brought home her sister, Toffee. Since they were from the same litter, although Caramel initially showed some hostility towards Toffee, they didn’t fight. By the next day, their relationship had blossomed, and they became inseparable companions.
Now, Caramel and Toffee are over a year old. They bring so much joy and warmth to our lives. Their unique personalities, from Caramel’s initial shyness that quickly turned into confidence, to Toffee’s easy – going nature that helped them bond, make every day with them an adventure. They are not just pets; they are an important part of our family. Even my parents, who were initially hesitant, have fallen in love with these two little Siamese treasures. Looking at their photos and thinking about our journey together, I realize how lucky I am to have them by my side, brightening up every moment with their cuteness and charm.
