However, many Siamese cat owners will notice an interesting phenomenon: their Siamese cats seem to turn black as the seasons or the environment change. What scientific mystery lies behind this? It turns out that it is all related to the TYR gene in Siamese cats, also known as the “tanning gene”.
The TYR gene plays a crucial role in the body of Siamese cats. Its main function is to produce tyrosinase, which is the key substance that regulates the production of melanin. In most animals, high – temperature environments tend to promote the increase of melanin, which makes the hair color darker. But Siamese cats are different. They show a significant increase in black color in low – temperature conditions. The root cause of this peculiar phenomenon is that the TYR gene in Siamese cats has mutated, resulting in a completely opposite performance compared to other animals.
Specifically, the tyrosinase in Siamese cats is most active at temperatures below 25°C. This means that when the environmental temperature drops, tyrosinase will work more actively to promote the production of melanin, which in turn makes the hair color of Siamese cats darker. So, in winter or when the air – conditioning temperature is set too low in summer, we can clearly see that Siamese cats become much blacker. Their original clear coat color seems to be covered by a mysterious black veil, looking very interesting.
In addition to the influence of seasons and temperature, shaving can also cause significant changes in the coat color of Siamese cats. When Siamese cats need to be shaved for reasons such as physical examinations, the temperature of the shaved part will be relatively lower because the skin is directly exposed to the air. In this case, the activity of tyrosinase increases, and the newly grown hair will be darker in color. However, smart owners have also found a way to deal with this. If proper local warming measures are taken after shaving the Siamese cat to keep the skin temperature relatively high, the activity of tyrosinase will be inhibited, and the newly grown hair will not turn as black.
This interesting phenomenon not only allows us to have a deeper understanding of the unique physiological characteristics of Siamese cats but also reminds us, as owners, to pay more attention to the living environment and temperature regulation of Siamese cats. In the cold season, we can provide warm beds and blankets for Siamese cats to prevent them from staying in low – temperature environments for a long time. When using air – conditioning in summer, we should also pay attention to setting the temperature within an appropriate range to maintain their normal body temperature.
