Siamese Cats: The “Color-Changing Wizards” Governed by Temperature

In the pet world, Siamese cats have become the focus of discussion among many pet owners due to their unique “color-changing” ability. The sentence full of helplessness and expectation, “When a Siamese cat turns as black as charcoal, can it turn white again?” expresses the voices of countless owners.

Siamese cats are truly “amazing creatures” among cats. Their characteristic of changing fur color is like a unique magic bestowed by nature. Chinese people have always had a special pursuit of “whiteness.” Especially for beauty-loving girls, they spare no effort in spending a lot of time and energy on whitening. However, Siamese cats do the opposite. Their fur color is affected by temperature, turning “as black as charcoal” when it gets cold.

When Siamese cats are just born, they are snow-white, like pure little angels, and their fluffy appearance makes people can’t help but want to hold them in their hands. But as time passes, especially when the temperature gradually drops, their faces, ears, backs, and limbs seem to be cast with a “darkening” spell, and the color of their fur begins to darken quietly. The originally white body is gradually covered by dark colors. Most owners buy Siamese cats when they are at the “peak of their appearance” with the lightest fur color. But it doesn’t last long. Soon, the owners will be surprised to find that their little cats seem to have undergone a “complete transformation,” and the former “little white cats” have become “little black cats.”

Knowing this characteristic of Siamese cats, owners start various “warm-keeping battles” to protect their cats’ “beauty.” Every winter, all kinds of warm-keeping measures are taken one after another: soft little beds, warm heating pads, cute little clothes… Owners full of hope want to make their Siamese cats “darken more slowly.” However, the reality is often disappointing. These efforts usually have little effect in the face of the Siamese cats’ “color-changing magic.” Once a Siamese cat turns as black as charcoal, it is almost impossible to return to its former snow-white appearance. Many owners have held a glimmer of hope, expecting a miracle to happen, but in the end, they can only accept the reality helplessly.

However, even if Siamese cats become darker and darker, they still stand out among many cat breeds with their unique charm. Siamese cats have a gentle and affectionate personality. They like to stick to their owners and are very smart, able to interact with their owners as if they can understand what the owners say. Their cuteness has nothing to do with the color of their fur. Even if they are as black as “coal,” they are still adorable.

Behind this amazing color-changing phenomenon of Siamese cats is a scientific principle. There is an active tyrosinase in their bodies, which is extremely sensitive to temperature. When the temperature drops, the activity of tyrosinase increases, promoting the synthesis of melanin and thus causing the fur color to darken; when the temperature rises, the activity of tyrosinase decreases, and the synthesis of melanin is reduced. Unfortunately, this color-changing process is not under the control of the cats themselves. If they could, presumably Siamese cats wouldn’t want to become “coal bosses.” Precisely because of this unique fur color change, Siamese cats have gained an image and imposing nickname – “coal bosses.”

Siamese cats are like “miracles” created by nature. Their “color-changing magic” adds endless fun to ordinary life. Whether they are as white as angels or as black as charcoal, they capture the hearts of countless owners in their unique ways and become indispensable lovely companions in people’s lives.
